Our Guide To Keene

Updated: Aug 1, 2018

The town of Keene includes both Keene and Keene Valley. While our community is small, we have a lot to offer! Below are some of our favorite local brick and mortar shops and restaurants in no particular order. We hope you will visit them during your stay with us!

Gifts & Gear

The Birch Store has been one of my favorite stores in the Adirondacks for many years. It has the best selection of women's clothing and jewelry of any store in the area (including Lake Placid), in my opinion. They also carry home furnishings, unique gifts, kids' clothes and toys, accessories for both men and women, men's clothing, furniture, and (my favorite) women's shoes! They also have a new website (linked above).

The Adirondack Attic is a quaint little consignment shop located a few doors down from the Dartbrook Lodge. They offer your typical thrift store items with some vintage hidden gems mixed in. I love going in there to see the owner's latest picks. I usually come out with something eclectic that I wouldn't normally buy. Mostly clothing, shoes, and accessories with some vintage and antique furniture and decor items mixed in.

The Mountaineer is a Keene staple. They have everything you might need for your outdoor adventure and can also offer great advice on local trail conditions, guiding services, and recommendations for outdoor activities in the area. The staff are super friendly and the store has something for everyone.

Our very own rustic furniture and decor store! Featuring handcrafted Adirondack rustic furniture made right in our workshop, locally made gifts, rustic home decor, rugs & lighting, custom designed furniture, and unique accessories. We also have a new website and can deliver or ship items directly to your door.

Bald Mountain Rustics is located in Keene Valley and offers traditional Adirondack style rustic furniture made by Steve Bowers and other talented local artisans. Steve specializes in custom designed rustic pieces, including unique root chairs, lamps, dining tables, and so much more. View the gallery on his website and stop in and see his great work!

Owl's Head Rustics is located just up the hill from Dartbrook Lodge on Route 73. You can't miss the giant Adirondack chair located on their front lawn! They offer a wide variety of Adirondack rustic furniture, quilts, decor items, and gifts.

A local maple producer with a cute little shop right in Keene! They also make an appearance at local farmers markets and shops, so keep an eye out! I recommend trying their famous Maple Cream or their Maple Whiskey made in partnership with the local Gristmill Distillers. Shop Black Rooster Maple products online on their new website (link above).

Hosted Sundays during the summer and early fall in Marcy field, The Keene Valley Farmers Market showcases local vendors from around the Adirondacks. Featuring local crafts, cheese from Sugar House Creamery, produce from local farmers, & so much more!

Hudson Art Center & Frame Shop is located right next to Dartbrook Rustic Goods. Much of our custom framing is done by the talented John Hudson. Not your average frame shop, Hudson Art Center features a gallery of local art and custom frame work.

Valley Grocery

Keene's only grocery and deli, it's loved by both tourists and locals alike. Sadly, Valley Grocery caught fire Spring 2018 and is currently closed. The owners plan to rebuild. Keep an eye our for news of their reopening.

Not your average hardware store, Valley Hardware offers unique gifts, Adirondack furniture, and everything a traditional small-town hardware store has to offer. They save us a trip to Lake Placid at least once a week! A must stop shop for your more practical items as well as a fun gift to remember your travels.

Food & Beverage

Offering delicious baked goods, pre-made heat & eat dinners, sandwiches, soup & salads, great coffee, local produce, gifts, and grocery items. A great little market with a wide variety of items! Carry out or relax in the summer on their outdoor picnic tables. They also have a great wine and spirits shop, selling favorites from the local Gristmill Distillers. Have cash on you! They have a $10 credit card minimum.

Famous for the 99 cent coffee! The ADK Market makes wonderful sandwiches & soups, incredible muffins & pies. They also carry grocery items, local gifts, and more! They have an espresso machine, and make fantastic maple lattes. Gluten free or Vegan? The ADK Market carries local fare from Mountain Tomboy, specializing in delicious sweets and edibles!

Forty Six is our very own farm to table restaurant! It's located right on Dartbrook Lodge property and features lunch and dinner. Dine inside our cozy dining room or enjoy the open air deck during the warmer months!

Best burgers in town and wonderful views! We featured this local favorite in our "Dining Guide: Great Food with a View". Baxter Mountain Tavern is a great place to grab a nice meal after a day on the trails or slopes. They have a nice beer selection, offer a lovely dining room, and have a great outdoor patio for seating during the warmer months.

Popular amongst tourists and locals, the Ausable Inn & Restaurant is the only full bar along Route 73 in Keene. Great food, wonderful staff and a local, hometown feel! They offer a cozy indoor dining room with large fireplace or a nice outdoor deck.

Your classic local diner, Noonmark is both delicious and consistent! Famous for their incredible pies (I recommend the Maple Walnut Pie). You can grab a coffee or ice cream to-go or take a seat and enjoy one of the few spots in Keene that offer table service!

East Branch Organics offers floral design, landscaping, gifts, wine and craft beer. They have three greenhouses for annual and perennial production and are open year around. Their craft beer and wine selection is great! Located right in Keene behind the Stewart's gas station.

Rivermede is one of the original local farm markets in the area and has been around since 1906. They produce local veggies and pure maple syrup. Their farm store is located in Keene Valley. They are open year around with limited hours in the winter months and offer delicious fresh soups, sandwiches and baked goods during the summer and fall months. Have cash on you! They have a $20 credit card minimum.
